Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yoga?

Yoga is defined as a group of physical practices, breathing exercises, concentration and meditation, with roots in ancient India. Etymologically, the word yoga comes from the Sanskrit “yuj” and means “to join”, “to unite” or “to bind”. The goal of yoga practice is harmony between body - mind - soul.

The Indian sage Patanjali collected yoga practice in the Yoga Sutras, about 2,000 years ago. The Sutras are a collection of 196 statements that serve as a philosophical guide for most of the yoga practiced today. They also outline eight branches of yogic practice: yama (restrictions), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation) and samadhi (absorption).

Today, most people who practice yoga engage in the third branch, asana, which is a program of physical postures intended to purify the body and provide the strength and physical endurance needed for long periods of meditation, but yoga postures or positions were not a key part of the original yoga traditions of India. Fitness was not a primary goal. Practitioners of the yogic tradition focused instead on expanding spiritual energy using breathing techniques and mental focus.
